The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a report on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in real-world conditions.
The study found the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 twodose vaccines to be 90% effective at preventing infections two weeks after the second vaccine dose. Additionally, the study found the vaccines to be 80% effective at preventing infections two weeks after one dose.
The study was conducted on 3,950 health care personnel, first responders and other essential and frontline workers who completed weekly COVID-19 testing for 13 consecutive weeks.
The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines have been shown to be effective in preventing symptomatic cases of COVID-19 in clinical trials. However, according to the CDC, the benefits of these vaccines for preventing asymptomatic and symptomatic COVID-19 infections are less understood, particularly when administered in real-world conditions.
Because the study focused on analyzing the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines on a group of front-line working adults whose jobs put them at a high risk of COVID-19 exposure, health experts view the CDC’s report as significant. The findings from this report are largely consistent with clinical studies of the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. Importantly, the implications of this report displayed that COVID-19 vaccines are effective for preventing infection in real-world conditions.
